So many watches. So little time.
Most people do not know this about me, but I am a sucker for watches. Be them for the wrist or the pocket, nothing piques my interest more or gets my imagination rolling like the beauty of a well designed timepiece.
The category of my object of obsession is specifically limited to those watches with a mechanical movement. None of that digital, quartz, atomic-synched, battery powered mumbo jumbo with a combination altimeter, gps, heart rate monitor, and tea timer for me. No, I much prefer the engineering marvels whose guts are composed of gears, springs, and jewels with their almost inaudible tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick… Oh, how I love that.
Of course, I am not above a well made quartz watch. In fact, for my wedding present, my lovely wife gave me an Oakley GMT, which I wear every day with much delight. While digital, it keeps very good time, has some nice features (e.g., two alarms and the ability to display the time in another part of the world), is extremely comfortable, and is both designed and made very well. As an added bonus, every time I check my watch I think of her.
The other day, I stumbled upon quite possibly the most evil blog on the planet. A site where I am sure tons of my time will be sucked away. (Oh, the irony.) For all intensive purposes, this site might as well be classified as p0rn for me and, from the looks of it, the blog writer has similar feelings.
At the moment, some of my favorites are:
- TAG Heuer Monoco V4 concept (which appears to be no more)
- Richard Mille Tourbillion RM 012
I suppose this hidden obsession of mine has more to do with my love for things that are well designed than anything else, but that is a topic for a later date.
Alas, in the end, most of my time will have to be spent dreaming of these tiny machines rather than owning them — at least until my family has a very good financial foundation built. Then, and only then, will I be able to splurge a little.
