Snow (Ice) Day

It is currently 28 degrees (F) outside and snow has started falling. For many parts of the world, this is a common site during the winter months. However, in this part of Texas we only have three seasons: a week of “winter,” a couple of months of “almost summer,” and then many oppressive months of summer heat.

So, you can imagine that when weather like this hits our city there is nothing less than pandemonium. The grocery shelves go bare with people stocking up on food. I mean, it could be a whole day or two before they are able to leave the house again. You have to prepare for the worst, I supposed. It’s like Y2k all over again.

For instance, yesterday my wife and I had to run an errand at her office. On our way home, we saw about fifteen cars stopped along the side of the road in front of us. Thinking that there was a wreck caused by ice patches that were on the roads, I slowed down considerably. As we passed, we got a good chuckle: people were lined up to buy firewood.

Another good laugh came just a few minutes ago as we watched one of our neighbors pull their car in their garage. See, most people use their garages for all the extra crap they cannot fit into the rest of their house, so they end up parking their cars on the driveway. For some weird reason, our neighbor felt compelled to reorganize their garage so that they could park their car in there. Being that the temperature has not gone above 32 degrees in at least twenty-four hours, and that most of that time the conditions have gone from freezing rain, to sleet, and now snow, you can imagine what kind of shape their driveway was in.

And so, it was with much schadenfreude that we watched our neighbor spend ten minutes (seriously) trying to pull their car into their garage. The angle of the drive way caused their car to slide backward every so often. Six inches forward, two feet back. Eventually, they pulled it off, but not without a lot of steam from spinning wheels. Quite amusing.

Ahhh, Texas.
