Good Graphics

I love it when graphics are used in a way which instantly and quickly conveys the message behind them. Of course, some of the time, the message they convey is not entirely positive. However, other times they can be used as a tool to quickly analyze and absorb data.

The New York Times released a new interactive graphic that does just that for the past six State of the Union addresses. I think it is a really fantastic way of conveying information.

Using this tool, it is very easy to not only see the common themes in the addresses (and how they have changed given the current events at the time of their delivery), but also how they forecast the policy initiatives for the administration.

Words like “balanced budget,” “environment,” health care,” “medicare,” “social security,” and in many cases “hope” seem to have been and continue to be on the outer edges of the radar.

An argument can certainly be made that the direction of the administration does not always match that of the people it is supposed to be serving. But I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions and opinions.
